What's the Phonics Screening Check?

It's a short, friendly check that all children in England do towards the end of Year 1 (ages 5–6). It's simply a way for schools to see how well children are getting on with their phonics.

Children read 40 words aloud to their teacher: 20 real words and 20 made-up "alien" words. It only takes a few minutes, and there's no pass or fail — just a helpful snapshot.

The alien words are there to check that children are sounding out properly, rather than just recognising words they've seen before.
